Petroglyphs

 Mint Hill, North Carolina

Next time you're at a historic cemetery take a close look at the grave markers. You may find petroglyphs, or indigenous writing.

Due to the expense of purchasing a carved stone to mark a grave, many made use of what was readily available, such as this stone fragment marking the grave an enslaved individual.

Judacuallah Rock, Cullowhee, NC

Oral histories state that Judacullah landed on this rock so hard that he left his handprints behind. Can you find them?

Looking for petroglyphs? Here's a hint.

Look for them on large boulders near river bends.

These ones are near the Catawba River.

Hagood Mill Petroglyph Site shows a variety of petroglyph designs most of which date to before the nineteenth century.

They are likely much older.
